About

Barnsley's martial arts academy

More than a membership. Somewhere you belong.

“Fantastic Club! Brilliant coaching and a family atmosphere that can't be beaten.”

Archie Coffield
A coach demonstrating a grip to a student during a class

Why this academy exists

I did not start training because I was confident. I started because I was not, and because I had run out of other ideas about how to fix that.

What I found was that confidence is not something anybody hands you. It is what is left over after you have been put in a hard situation, got it wrong, and come back the following week anyway.

That is the whole method, and there is nothing else to it.

So this is not a place that hands out praise. It is a place that gives people something difficult to do and then stays beside them while they do it.

When a child taps, gets up and goes again, something changes in how they carry themselves. Their parents see it at home before we see it on the mat.

If that is what your family is looking for, come and meet us. One session will tell you more than this page can.

Who we are for

You will fit in here if

  • You expect a professional environment

Clean mats. Qualified coaches. A structured programme from day one.

  • You want something the whole family does

Your child starts. Then you join. It becomes part of your week.

  • You are here for the long term

Not a hobby you try for a month. A skill that builds over years.

Who we are not for

We are probably not your academy if

  • You are shopping for the cheapest option

We are not the cheapest and never will be.

  • You think this is just about fighting

Nobody here trains to hurt anyone.

  • You want another term-by-term activity

This is not swimming lessons. It is a life skill.

Our values

Three rules that shape everything we do.

  • Fierce generosity

The better you get, the more you give back. Whether it is on the mats or behind the desk, success here comes with responsibility. Not status.

  • Aggressive humility

We never stop being students. We listen, we adjust, and we do not pretend to have all the answers. That goes for everyone at this academy.

  • Deliberate craft

We would rather do it right than do it fast. Every session, every message, every decision gets the same attention to detail. If it has our name on it, it meets the standard.

Our mission

[GAP: the mission statement for Barnsley. The live HQ text is wrong and is deliberately not carried. Tiernan supplies it.]

In every kids session

The standards every child learns from day one

  • Respect

Treating people how you would like to be treated.

  • Discipline

Keep showing up. Even when you do not want to.

  • Courage

Doing the thing even though you are scared to do it.

  • Humility

Know your strengths and weaknesses. Be willing to learn.

  • Kindness

Give more than you should. Even when you do not have to.

  • Integrity

Doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching.

  • Teamwork

Make the people around you better, not just yourself.

  • Patience

Figuring out what to do in the meantime.

Meet your team

[GAP: the real Barnsley roster. Every coach below is invented so this section can be reviewed.]

Head coach, adults

Sample Coach One

“Nobody gets left on the edge of the mat in my class.”

Head coach, kids

Sample Coach Two

“The quiet ones usually surprise everybody, including themselves.”

Kickboxing

Sample Coach Three

“Feet first. Everything else is easier once you can move.”

Juniors

Sample Coach Four

“Getting it wrong is the lesson. Coming back is the point.”

Teens and competition

Sample Coach Five

“Train hard enough that the competition feels like Tuesday.”

Absolutely Incredible. A very welcoming environment, it has a calm, disciplined yet friendly feel to it too. The coaches are extremely knowledgeable, approachable and I find them to be humble too.

Common questions

How do I know if this school is right for me?

Honestly, the best way is to come in for a free session and see how it feels.

We are not the right fit for everyone, and we would rather you found out in a trial session than signed up and regretted it.

What makes this school different from others nearby?

Most schools will not answer this question directly, so we will. The difference is purpose.

Every session is built around one goal: producing confident people who do not bully others and do not get pushed around either.

What would a current member say you do worst?

Organisation. As we have grown and added new programmes, keeping communication clear and bookings simple has not always kept pace. We know it, and we are working on it.

We genuinely want to hear from members when something is not working.

What do you expect from your members?

Show up regularly, respect the people around you, and be willing to learn. That is really it.

Progress at this academy comes from trying things, getting them wrong, and coming back the next session ready to go again.

There is a free session with your name on it.

Walking in the first time is the hard part. Tell us you are coming and we will handle the rest.
